Dana Goodwin studied flute with Philip Dikeman, Michael Schwalm, and Deborah Scott Katz. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and has completed a Master’s Certificate and further Master’s studies at Eastern Michigan University. Most recently, her academic enrichment includes Montessori primary and lower elementary teaching training.

Teaching Experience: Ms. Goodwin’s teaching experience spans twenty four years, including private flute studio instruction and group ensemble for students of all ages. She is currently the flute mentor for the Summer Music Camp at the Grand Traverse Civic Center.

Teaching Method: The whole subject of the flute is emphasized, rather than focusing on one particular method of teaching. For primary and elementary students, an emphasis is placed on the absorption of music (comparable to the child’s “explosion into language”) by utilizing the Suzuki repertoire and CDs, but teaching students to read music in their first year. Attention is given to the prepared environment and developmental stages.

As the student progresses to the intermediate-advanced levels, instruction draws more heavily from the French School, a concept of playing based on the enormous influence of Marcel Moyse. Emphasis is placed on his teachings, books, and methods, as well as his playing and the works of composers in a variety of styles including progressive tone and technique studies by Moyse, Taffanel, Gaubert, Furtenau, Koehler, and Trevor Wye. Music appreciation and history are also taught.

Students are welcome to bring to their lessons school music from marching, symphonic band/orchestra, or solo & ensemble performance work for custom tailored tutoring and audition/try-out preparation.

Ms. Goodwin has performed in the International Symphony Orchestra, Plymouth Community Band, and TC Celtic. She teaches both classical and Celtic styles.
