A generation ago, children were blessed with music opportunities. They grew up watching Leonard Bernstein’s “Young People’s Concerts,” the Boston Pops Orchestra, Liberace’s piano showmanship. Children created their first music by “plinking” on the keys of the family piano, eventually taking formal music lessons. School music programs regularly included orchestra, band, and choir.

Things have since changed. Music lessons have become the exception, rather than the rule. There are fewer music opportunities available in schools. The causes are many, including difficult economic times, greater focus on extracurricular sports, and lack of exposure to fine music.

It would be easy to assume that popular taste has hastened the end of what we know as classical, jazz, and folk music. Yet, every time we perform for a group of school children, the response and interest of the children present is overwhelming. Everyone wants to be part of the music. The smiles on these young faces are affirmation of the importance of music within each of us.

The Bay Area Music Foundation and Traverse Community Music share the common goal of providing music education for children. Our goal is simple. We want children to grow up knowing what it feels like to pick out songs on a piano, recognize the soaring notes of a flute, hear the sounds of a violin bow drawn across a string, or to practice rhythmic patterns on a percussion instrument. Kids want and need to make music. Music feeds the brain, heart, and soul.

Please join us on Saturday, February 18th, 6:00 PM at the Dennos Museum for an Evening of Music and Celebration. The festivities will begin with hors d’oeuvres, silent auction, live music, and cash bar. Money raised will be used to help provide student scholarships for private lessons and summer camp, community outreach programs for local school age children, and group classes for young families, particularly those with special needs children.

This will be followed by an 8:00 PM concert produced by the Dennos Museum Center, in Milliken Auditorium, featuring violinist Stanislav Pronin. Your premium ticket will admit you to both events. Please reserve your tickets by February 10th. If you would like to donate an item or service to be auctioned at our event, please contact us.

Thank you and Best Wishes,
